Born and raised in East London, Naomi Scott is a Singer/Songwriter and Actress who got her first start on Disney Channel. Now an established artist as well as an actress Naomi talks about her promoting her new film, Power Rangers, and her music.
What's new for you this September?
With my year anything goes, September is just a continuation of the year for me. I'm heading into a season of promoting the movie so I'm looking forward to being back with the cast and everything.
How are you feeling about promoting?
I'm heading to New York Comic-con next week so that should be really fun. I went to Comic-con in San Diego last month and that was crazy but I've never been to the New York one before. I think it's a bit more chilled, as chilled as Comic-con can be.
Not only do you act, but you sing too! What inspires you to be creative in your music?
A lot of other music. On the one hand, I listen to a lot of gospel. I'm a PK (Pastors Kid) so when I was younger I listened to a lot of Mary Mary, Kim Burrell all that good stuff, amazing voices. Kate bush is a massive influence for me. I'm a very visual person so music videos inspire me. Not just the stuff you see on MTV but independent artists who basically make short films. Anything dance related always really inspires me.
The music industry itself is incredibly diverse so how do you stop your work from become repetitive.
That's a good question! It's hard actually. There are times when I start writing a song and I think, "you've basically written this song before, Nay". It's just about trying things. I like to keep people guessing with where the song is going to go. I think people like Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper do that really well when it comes to music. I don't know why two rappers spring to mind... that's probably the influence of my husband.
What about in your acting, do you go for similar roles or are you making a conscious effort to do different things?
I do make a conscious effort to go for different things. I believe that I can play more than one thing so I want to showcase that and challenge myself.
Being creative doesn't come easily to everyone, are there any things that you have to overcome in order to be creative?
I'll start practically. Location. Whether you're a writer, actor or a singer, whatever, your location does play a part. If you're writing in a tiny room you might feel different to when you're outside in the fresh air. One major thing is what you think you should be writing. For example, when you're writing a song for radio, you might think that you have to write a certain thing. There are these unspoken rules of what you should do that can stump creativity. Preconceptions can definitely swamp creativity. For me, I have to just not be afraid to try things.
Fear is clearly the biggest thing when it comes to creativity. You can't define what creativity is to you. You can't put it in a box. Don't get me wrong, there's just delusion as well when you're like "that's just not good" but that's why you have people around you who you trust. You have to trust yourself and try different things.
How do you balance the freedom of being creative with staying focussed? Working hard and dreaming big?
Some people just say "Follow your dreams" and don't get me wrong I support that but some people want to get there without the hard work. I'm still learning that. One of my friends Bridget (Mendler) she writes so often and I'm like "I need to write more. Come on, Nay".
Be proactive as well. Nothing is going to come to you if you don't specifically ask for it. We're all prone to being lazy, apart from those aliens whose work ethic is just ridiculous.
In terms of believing in yourself, you always have to believe in yourself even when no one around you does. Now, there's a line between delusion and dreaming big; always keep yourself grounded. Make sure you know that this is what you're good at and this is what truly you want to do. The question is "Do I want to act? or Do I want to be famous? There are a lot of people who want to be famous as if it's an occupation and it's not"
I believe I can do whatever I want to do but if God wants me somewhere else I'm cool with that as well because I don't want to be somewhere where He doesn't want me anyway.
What are typical Naomi Scott traits?
Oh gosh, There's the old Naomi, which is scatty... unorganised. Those words spring to mind. But with all of that came the ability to be flexible. Part of the reason why I can just pick up and go off for months is because I'm a bit of a free spirit. Now I'm the same just a bit more honed in. I'm more organised but I still tend to lose things.
How are those traits evident in the work you do?
In terms of acting, I didn't go to drama school and I wasn't trained. However, because I'm quite free spirited I can allow myself to be in the moment. Because I can't do two things at once, when I am doing something, I am fully immersed in it. If I'm talking to you in this moment I'm giving you 100% of me... what was the question again?... oh yeah so hopefully all of that makes my acting more natural.
Growing up in church and going on mission trips to Slovakia and India I've just been surrounded by so many different people and that's helped me to be able to connect with people on set.
I've always been fascinated by what makes us who we are? By the things that separate and unite us. You're in an industry where you get to discover that day in and day out. What are some of your favourite characters that you've played?
I enjoy different characters for different reasons. I love awkward characters. I love playing strong female characters that know what they want. Then there are more dramatic characters where you have to delve into your emotions. It's fun that you get to just be really dramatic.
The most fun character that I've ever played was when I did my A-Levels. Our exam piece was Bernada Alba, written by a Spanish playwright called Fredrico Garcia Loca and I played a cripple called Martirio. Anything that's more of a challenge is really fun.
What is your advice on making the best out of new opportunities and fresh starts?
Allow yourself to change and grow. Make the most out of every opportunity even if it's not where you want to be. I would always encourage everyone to do what they do with excellence.
