Life is somewhat rhythmic. There is a particular ebb and flow to the different scenes of life which make it both predictable and completely free-spirited. I don't want to explain away the beauty of it because, really, it's something to be felt. However, thinking about the rhythm of life helps to give us a certain clarity in times when life feels offbeat. There is an overriding sense of peace when things are working out as planned, when life is on beat Sometimes, without warning, life trips and switches to a new rhythm. In the interim, it's easy to lose track of where we are.
I find it really difficult to handle people being out of time, whether it be clapping, singing or dancing. It messes with my mind. However, there is something transient about it. Something that is actually inspiring. I don't mean for that to sound patronising. It is really hard to be about of time on purpose. You naturally find another rhythm by default. There's something tenacious about not actually hearing the rhythm but committing to clapping, singing or dancing. Similarly, in life, there are some seasons where you have to live out of time and find the rhythm when you can.
People often describe the 'rhythm' of particular towns and cities as being different. Some people are attracted to London because of its fast-paced hustle. On the other hand, many Londoners can't wait to fly out of the city and head somewhere where life is a little slower. Similarly, we can talk about how times in our lives feel "fast-paced" or how we need things to slow down. All these descriptives serve to create a narrative of life being written on top of some type of rhythm.
The way I see it, there are two types of rhythm: universal and individual.
Universal rhythms are the things that affect us as a whole; the trends and culture that defines this time in history as different from another. Our individual rhythms are the changes and seasons that are unique to us which define us as different from other people. Life is an interesting track of universal rhythms and individual rhythms.
Some seasons of life are a slow song and song seasons are fast. Some seasons are country music, others are rap. Life has a particular kind of rhythm that is not easy to decipher. It may be one tempo and change in an instant. It catches you by surprise and yet you find yourself walking in time to it.
